How to Book a Tee Time at a UK Golf Club
Published: 2026-02-21
Booking a tee time in the UK is usually simple, but visitor access varies by club. Here’s how direct, phone and platform bookings typically work.
The direct answer: most UK golf clubs allow visitors to book tee times online via their own website, by phone, or through third-party booking platforms. Private members' clubs may restrict visitor access to certain days and times — always check before assuming you can book.
The Three Ways to Book
1. Direct through the club website. Most established clubs have an online booking system on their website. This is the most reliable method — you book directly, confirm your slot, and receive a confirmation email. Payment is either made online or on the day.
2. By phone. Calling the pro shop or reception is still the standard method at many traditional clubs. It allows you to ask questions about conditions, availability, and any visitor requirements. Some clubs — particularly smaller or more traditional venues — only accept phone bookings.
3. Through a third-party booking platform. Platforms aggregate tee times from multiple courses in a searchable interface, sorted by price, time, and location. These are useful for comparing options but occasionally show limited availability compared to booking direct. Price differences between platforms and direct booking do occur.
Private Members' Clubs vs Open Courses
The key distinction when booking is whether the club is a private members' club or an open/public course.
Private members' clubs give priority access to members. Visitor tee times are typically restricted to specific days (often Monday to Friday, or certain weekend slots), and sometimes restricted to certain times of day. At the most exclusive venues, visitor bookings require a letter of introduction from a member.
Open courses and pay-and-play venues have no membership requirement. All tee times are available to any golfer. Online booking is standard.
If you're unsure which category a course falls into, calling ahead takes 60 seconds and avoids a wasted journey.
What to Expect When You Arrive
On arrival:
- Check in at the pro shop or reception, confirm your booking name and time
- Pay any remaining balance if not settled online
- Check conditions — staff will let you know about temporary greens, wet weather rules, or course closures
- Observe the dress code and have your handicap certificate available if required (some clubs ask for proof of handicap for visitor play)
Allow 20–30 minutes before your tee time to warm up on the practice facilities if available.
Booking Tips
- Book early for weekends. Peak weekend tee times at popular courses can book out days or weeks in advance.
- Midweek is easier. If you have flexibility, midweek slots offer better availability and often lower green fees.
- Group bookings need planning. Most courses have a maximum of four players per booking. Groups of more than four will need multiple tee time slots back to back.
- Check cancellation policies. Some courses charge cancellation fees for late changes, especially on pre-paid bookings.
